Ever wondered what God is like? Well if you think about it… He created man in His own image, so if you look at men and work backwards you’ll get the picture. God is clearly self-obsessed and geeky. He wants to get laid, avoid hassle and be allowed to play with His toys. Granted God’s toys are the ones He creates bits of the Universe with but you get the idea.
Of course things for Him needn’t always be like this. Men can change – some of them – and so can God. And in this novel God recounts a recent period when He discovered that He was no longer satisfied with His life. The change took Him completely by surprise. He follows the incidents and thinking that enabled Him to understand what His discontent was all about. And where He should go from here, for Himself and for man and womankind.
Michael Z. Lewin is the award-winning author of numerous mystery novels and short stories. This is the first time, however, he’s taken on the mystery of life, the universe and the rest of it. If you know his work, you’ll recognize his light touch style but these are weighty issues.
More than anything else, this book is comment on modern man, looking down. In an earlier book, Rover’s Tales, the perspective on modern man was from the ground up. In fact Rover makes a guest appearance in Confessions.
Here's what the legendary mystery writer, Peter Lovesey, says about CONFESSIONS of a DISCONTENTED DEITY
"Confessions is a joy and I’m sure it will entertain and amuse everyone lucky enough to read it, bishops, priests and born-again Christians included. Rabbis, too. There’s such good sense and wisdom at the heart of this wonderful romp through heaven and earth. The idea is inspired and the energy and ingenuity of each chapter explore the nature of, well, almost everything that matters. The brilliance is that while we are treated to such fun with a God learning to be streetwise, the story is rooted in good theology. I hope He will return."
CONFESSIONS OF A DISCONTENTED DEITY edition by Michael Z Lewin Literature Fiction eBooks
I can see why no one else has reviewed 'Confessions Of A Discontented Deity'. Michael Z. Lewin has long been one of the most unique talents to write in the mystery genre. He began with a Private Eye series, set in his hometown of Indianapolis. His latest books concerns a family of private detectives, in Bath, England, where he has lived for many years. In between, he has gone in a number of different directions- including a short story series narrated by a dog. Where does 'Confessions' fit? It doesn't. It comes out of the blue. There is no way to tie this book to any of Lewin's previous work. What happens in the book? God finds himself discontented and decides to visit the earth in human form. To tell you more of the plot might ruin the surprises awaiting the reader. If you like Lewin, read this novel. One, very minor caveat. Lewin clearly does not understand the Trinity. God, Jesus and the Holy Ghost can not be seen- as they are in this book- as three entirely, seperate entities. Aside from this minor, minor quibble, a very enjoyable book by a fine writer.

CONFESSIONS OF A DISCONTENTED DEITY edition by Michael Z Lewin Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
CONFESSIONS OF A DISCONTENTED DEITY is different, delightful, clever, entertaining, laugh-out-loud, yet thought-provoking. Ideal for those who can read for only a limited time per reading session, because each chapter picks up easily from the last and sort of stands on its own. I gave a bunch for holiday gifts.
I was familiar with Michael Lewin in the short story mystery area, which is why I tried a book-length. Although not at all what I was expecting, I found the book absolutely LOL hilarious! Although some people could be offended, I was not. I thought it was imaginative and clever.
In between creating new planets and fixing mistakes with others God visits earth to find out where humanity went astray. He finds his creation bewildering. He begins to suspect that the problem is not in His creation but in Himself. This book is funny, per adaptive and, occasionally, poignant. The ending has an unexpected twist.
Lewin, perhaps best known for his Albert Samson private eye series, where humor and intelligence mingle with mystery, takes on a larger mystery with the same humor and intelligence -- only different. God, who hasn't paid much attention to earth of late, having spent his time on other creations, comes face to face with the problems inherent in his having created mankind in his own image. In this genre departure, Lewin lends his talent to the kind of thought-provoking fun we find with the irreverent playfulness of Shaw, Twain and Vonnegut.
In this inventive flip side of "The Screwtape Letters," Michael Z. Lewin gives a muddled creator who has cast mankind so close to his own image that He exhibits many of the same foibles as His creation, including a woeful misunderstanding of womankind. "Confessions of a Disenchanted Deity" follows God on a slyly humorous voyage of Self-discovery as He shuttles back and forth between a boring Heaven populated by sanctimonious do-gooders and an earth filled with dating services, radical religions, pompous academics, and other creatures He never envisioned on the seventh day of creation. With everyone from St. Peter to barroom pick-ups complaining about creation, God wonders whether the earth is worth saving or whether He should scrap it all and start over. Lewin's treatment of God's dilemma is quirky, clever and insightful, as well as being laugh-out-loud funny.
Very interesting. What's wrong with our world. Who/what is god. I'm a liberal religious institution-connected Christian. But I felt one fault was this ended up being about the Christian god. And it was a he. That said I still very much enjoyed reflecting on the author's ideas as I read.
